Editing Services

There are three basic levels of editing: developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading. I provide copyediting and proofreading services for all projects, and developmental editing on a case-by-case basis. Together we can determine which level or levels of attention your project needs.

Developmental editing

This is big-picture editing, focused on the “architecture” and readability of the work as a whole.

I will:

  • analyze the structuring and presentation of ideas.

  • check for omissions and jumps in logic.

  • edit for redundancies.

  • address confusing shifts in tone and perspective.

Copyediting

Copyediting zooms in to assess writing at the paragraph and sentence level.

I will:

  • edit for overall clarity and concision.

  • ensure that level and type of language used is appropriate to the target audience.

  • correct mechanical errors involving grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax.

  • check for formatting issues.

  • reinforce style rules for consistency.

  • review any visual elements such as graphs and tables for errors and effectiveness.

  • fact-check, at the request of the client.

Proofreading

Taking place after the text is typeset for printing, proofreading usually provides the last opportunity to fix mistakes.

I will comb through the text to find and fix:

  • spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other mechanical issues.

  • errors in spacing, and other formatting glitches.

  • any other egregious errors that may have slipped through the previous editing processes.

I will be happy to review a sample of your work and discuss your individual editing needs.

On rates: Fees will be determined on a project basis. Type of edit, need for fact-checking and/or editing of visual elements, genre of writing, deadline: all these and more will determine the final cost. I may ask to see a brief sample of the work (2,500 words or fewer) to gauge its overall requirements. Additionally, I can provide a no-cost sample edit of up to this length so you can see how changes will impact the work. I’m happy to discuss all this in greater detail with you on a prearranged free discovery call.

AI policy: I do not use ChatGPT or other forms of AI in editing, research, content creation, or in any areas of my client-facing work as an editor, writer, or quality assurance specialist. All corrections and analyses are performed by me.

Likewise, the content of client work will never be uploaded into any AI training program.

Additionally, I will not edit AI-generated manuscripts or other forms of text. (AI-assisted writing can be considered; please contact me to discuss this.)
